the love and hate of fashion.

at one point not so long ago i was convinced i would have a future working in the fashion industry, as a stylist or an editor, or something of the like. i have always loved clothes and i have always spent a lot of time and energy in how i dressed myself and how i encouraged others to dress. many of my friends kindly look to me to be their personal shopper which is something i thoroughly enjoy doing for them - fit, look, versatility, etc, they are all important factors in what one buys, and sometimes you just need an extra hand - that's often where i come in. anyways, after a stint of working as an intern at a beauty and health magazine that also dabbled slightly in fashion, i came to realize that the fashion industry is not for me. way too shallow, and even though i will confess to being materialistic, i'm not really wishing to pursue a career that basically facilitates taking poorly about someone's imperfections as they stand almost naked in front of me, or has me worrying about petty things like the lack of height in someone's heels, the extra weight they carry in their thighs, or the unhealthy chocolate bar they are consuming as a snack. after that experience, i kind of gave up any admiration for fashion i had. i still love buying clothes but i spend way less time researching designers and trends and models and brands. i'm content with dressing myself, and occasionally a friend when they ask, but there is no longer than desire to dress the world.

that being said, recently, through my love for the man repeller, i have allowed myself once again to appreciate fashion. i enjoy the way you can use fashion to make you feel a certain way, or to convey a message, or to make other people see something about you.

last week i was shopping with some of my girlfriends when my one friend, brooke, pointed out that i wear a lot of ugly things. and that is the truth. i'm sure some people (who don't have style.. haha) would look in my closet and think just that - "this stuff is ugly!!" - because i like unique, kind of wild pieces. so now when i shop not only do i think "is this piece ugly enough?" but i also consider it's repellant factor.

on the edge of my fashion-love re-ignition, i decided to youtube search for some hilarious videos of the man repeller. i was not disappointed. i was going to give her her own blog post, but this is the perfect segway, so here they are. i hope you lygbo ("laugh your ghetto booty off") and that you're inspired to repel (or propel) today!

...wait wait. what is a man repeller, you ask? this is my favourite part:

man·re·pell·er1  [mahn-ree-peller]
outfitting oneself in a sartorially offensive way that will result in repelling members of the opposite sex. Such garments include but are not limited to harem pants, boyfriend jeans, overalls (see: human repelling), shoulder pads, full length jumpsuits, jewelry that resembles violent weaponry and clogs.
–verb (used without object),-pell·ing, -pell·ed.
to commit the act of repelling men:
Girl 1: What are you wearing to the party?
Girl 2: My sweet lime green drop crotch utility pants!
Girl 1: Oh, so we're man repelling tonight?

this girl is golden! (can you say 'girl crush'??!)

i would like to slowly start incorporating more fashion into this blog. i need to start putting up more things from me, that i've made or done, as opposed to just sharing inspiring bible verses and songs i like, or providing you with the occasional life update or "life in photography apps" post.

since this will be a progression, in the meantime, here are some of my very favourite fashion blogs... or favourite blogs of fashionable people!

cupcakes and cashmere
for you, for me
fashion toast
the glamourai
the drifter and the gypsy
this is glamorous
garace dore
the rockstar diaries
grace like rain girls
and, of course, man repeller
